Hank Cliff is a character played by Spaceboy.

General Information[]

Hank Cliff is a simple man hailing from Arlen, Texas, who after being on the police force for 25 years, decided to move himself and his family to Los Santos. A straight-laced man of the law, in a city full of violent and mentally unstable maniacs, who desires nothing more than to help people rehabilitate themselves and live a better life. And maybe a good beer, some tobacco, and a grilled cheese.

Physical Description[]

Background Information[]

As a young boy, Hank was assaulted by a belligerent old man who attacked him out of nowhere, only for nearby police officers to take notice and save the young Cliff. Despite the fact that the attacker was unarmed, the two officers shot and executed the man right in front of Hank, which installed in Hank an admiration and trust of the police.

Hank later joined the local police in his hometown of Arlen, at some point married his wife Peggy Cliff, and got plenty of experience under his belt as a police officer.

One day, while out on patrol with a fellow officer named Bill, Cliff responded to a hostage situation, where the suspect wielded a propane tank as if it were a lethal weapon. Hank tried to convince the hostage to just run from the suspect, because the tank held little threat, but the hostage believed in the threat and refused to run, which led to the suspect beating the hostage senseless with said propane tank. Hank was not sure whether to chance shooting the propane tank, but still decided to fire at the suspect in an attempt to stop the suspect. Officer Bill, however, might have aimed for the propane tank on purpose, but this is speculation on Hank's part.

Upon moving to Los Santos, Hank applied to the LSPD as a State Trooper, where he was interviewed by Captain Commander James Shepard, who found Hank an interesting and likeable candidate.

Hank set himself apart by making it clear that if in a hostage situation, he would shoot the suspect if they had good trigger discipline, and by laughing when Commander Shepard mentioned having a dead wife.

On his first day as a Los Santos State Trooper, Hank was partnered with Lieutenant Adams as his Field Training Officer, and was put out on patrol, however as soon as Hank pulled their cruiser out of the LSPD parking garage, Hank's vehicle was stopped by Todd Biblioteca, a petty criminal and convicted murderer, who claimed to be part of a "Scared Straight" Program, and needed to wash cars as part of his program. Hank assented to Todd's request, pulling over and allowing the youth to wash the police car; however, Todd then requested to be paid $350, which Hank refused to do, but offered to put in a good word with Todd's Scared Straight Counselor,

However, while Hank was engaging with Todd, he met Stuart Pedasso, who took offense at Hank and Lieutenant Adams for being cops. Right after, Hank and Lieutenant Adams observed a man walking across the street armed with a machete, one Gus Burgandy. After Burgandy ran into the Police Department while armed with his machete, Todd's Scared Straight Counselor pulled out a gun and ran after Burgandy.

In response to this threat, Todd then pulled a pistol in defense of Trooper Cliff and Lieutenant Adams, and after Todd holstered his gun, Pedasso then pulled his own gun before crawling across the grass and demanding that Hank shoot him.

As a result of the scuffle, Burgandy, Biblioteca, Pedasso, and the counselor were apprehended, but only Burgandy and Biblioteca were arrested and charged, Burgandy for a score of reasons including brandishing a machete (And for having someone else's ID on him, along with… several, different keys to different cars, presumed stolen), and Biblioteca for brandishing a firearm and for possession of a firearm without a weapon's license. (Due to being a convicted murderer). Biblioteca was released with a fine, time-served.

Despite their rocky first meeting, Hank grew to like both Burgandy and Biblioteca, hiring Burgandy to do odd jobs for him, and coming to see Biblioteca like an unruly nephew.

Character Arc[]

The Cuban Saga[]

After meeting Osvaldo Pingafria outside the Los Santos PD, and after being kidnapped by Mr. Pingafria as part of a tragic "misunderstanding", Trooper Cliff and Mr. Pingafria quickly became enemies, despite Hank's best attempts to discourage Osvaldo from a life of crime, and to try to convince Ping-afria to turn his life around. Despite his many attempts, Osvaldo always proved hostile to Hank's attempts to connect with him, and later kidnapped Hank again, right after Osvaldo was released and fined for kidnapping Hank Cliff.

Later on, as part of a plan to get revenge against Hank, Osvaldo snuck into the trunk of Hank's police cruiser, intend to hide inside of it and attack Hank when he least expected it. However, what Osvaldo did not expect, was that Hank had seen Osvaldo approaching his cruiser, had heard the trunk open and close, and later figured out that Osvaldo was inside the trunk. Hank confronted Osvaldo and demanded he get out, only for Osvaldo to respond with a threat, pointing a machine gun at Hank. Osvaldo later escaped after Hank attempted to apprehend him, leading to a foot chase in the Los Santos Subway system between Osvaldo and the police, before Osvaldo was finally apprehended.

Later on, while patrolling with Commander Shepard, Hank met with the criminal Fingle Dan, who had previously shot Hank in the cheek, the bullet traveling through Hank's face entirely. (Though, as Fingle served time in jail for the shooting, Hank insisted that he held no grudge against Fingle, believing that Fingle had reformed during his brief stint in jail)

Osvaldo was among Fingle's men at the Fingle Dan-sion, and made many threats against Hank and Commander Shepard, of which Shepard returned.

Later on, Hank was confronted with a man who's prescription Codeine had been stolen by Osvaldo, though Osvaldo claimed to have purchased it. Hank was tasked with retrieving the Codeine from Osvaldo, but while on the phone with Hank, Osvaldo downed all of the Codeine at once, to spite Hank.

The Bathtub Tsunami[]

Hank was on scene when Los Santos was hit by a freak Tsunami, which flooded the city to the extreme, making travel near impossible and taking countless lives. Hank was part of a police envoy sent to assist survivors to safety, later taking refuse at the Vinewood Sign. However, due to the stress of his job, the stress of being caught in a Tsunami, and having abused prescription medication the night before, Hank suffered a psychotic episode, where he believed he drowned in his bathtub the night before. Hank believed that everything that was happening, was not real, that he was actually dead, and that because everything wasn't real, that his actions had no consequences. Hank pushed Gus Burgandy off of the Vinewood sign to drown in the floodwaters (Thus Gus survived, with amnesia), before shooting down several "Flying Demons", which in reality were Police rescue helicopters.

Relationships[]

+Relationships Name Relationship History
Peggy Cliff Wife Met and married at some point before 2024
Todd Biblioteca Friend / Surrogate Nephew Met on Hank's first day on patrol, where Todd endeared himself to Hank and Hank later shared his contact information with the young man, offering to provide him with support and fatherly advice whenever he needed it. However, Todd is a highly deranged figure in Hank's life, such as when Hank gave Todd several hundred dollars to pay a parking ticket, and Todd in turn tried to rob Hank at gunpoint for less than a quarter of that amount.
Gus Burgandy Friend / Employee Hank gave Gus a couple of odd jobs to do, but this led to Gus deciding that he worked for Hank, personally. Hank supplied Gus with several jobs, though to mixed results, and later provided a character witness at Gus' court case, where Gus tried to protect Hank from Todd Biblioteca, stabbing the young man with his machete. However, in a moment of panic, Hank shot Gus to stop him, though Gus made a full recovery, and held no grudge against Hank for shooting him
James Shepard Boss / Coworker Captain Commander James Shepard conducted Hank's interview to join the LSPD, and found Hank an... odd, but good applicant, though took offense at Hank's tendency to mispronounce words, and the fact that Hank laughed when Shepard revealed that his wife had died, along with their unborn child. Despite this rocky start, Shepard and Cliff got along well and later went on patrol together.
Osvaldo Pingafria Enemy During an instance where Hank Cliff and his fellow officers were detaining a suspect, Osvaldo stumbled upon him, "misunderstood" and "assumed" that Hank was being detained, and Osvaldo decided to pick up Hank and run off with him. Osvaldo then fled with Hank in his arms, before bringing him to the roof of a building to "wait out his detainment." Hank of course, took offense at this treatment, and Osvaldo was arrested and gave several fake names before Hank ran his DNA. Later on, Osvaldo snuck into the trunk of Hank's cruiser, and threatened him with a machine gun. After this, they encountered each other several more times, each with more malice, with Osvaldo becoming the closest thing Hank has to a nemesis.
